A 12 year old Martinique national is planning to swim from Saint Lucia to Fort de France.

Christophe Maleau is planning to undertake the 40 km swim in October, according to Martinique 1 Ere.

With less than three months before the planned swim, the youth who has been described as a child prodigy, is busy preparing for the grueling event.

Maleau is no stranger to swimming challenges.

In 2018 he successfully completed a ten-hour swim between Diamant and Schoelcher in Martinique.

The youngster undertook the challenge in bid to raise awareness of cancer.

His mother, Murielle, was diagnosed with breast cancer.

In 2017 Maleau completed a 6.4 km swim.

He has won a number of championship titles for swimming in the 500 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke, 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle categories.

In 1987, another celebrated French swimmer, Jacques Sicot, successfully completed the Martinique to Saint Lucia swim at the age of 39.

At the time he vowed to return to swim around Saint Lucia.

Sicot kept that promise in July 2017.
