Saint Lucia police are investigating a report of a firearm discharged in a public place in Castries.
According to the report, the incident occurred at about 1:45 pm on Wednesday at the junction of Jn. Baptiste and Calcresent Streets, where investigators discovered several spent shells.
There were no reports of injuries or arrests.
Since the beginning of 2024, Saint Lucia has experienced a spillover of deadly gun violence that plagued the previous year.
In 2023, there were seventy-five homicides, seventy of which were murders.
According to the police, most of the murders that year were the direct result of gang violence and gang rivalry.
This year so far, Saint Lucia has recorded 48 homicides, primarily involving the use of illegal firearms.
The deadly gun violence has continued despite numerous illegal gun and ammunition seizures by the police.
They included what the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) described as the ‘impressive’ seizure of 12 319 rounds of ammunition and twenty-one illegal firearms between April and June 2024.
