The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF), acknowledging that Monday’s brazen daylight shooting in Castries had left citizens in fear and panic, has sought to allay public disquiet over the incident.
Dead as a result of the shooting near Derek Walcott Square at about 2:20 pm is Jahiem Papius of Baboneau, pronounced dead at the scene by a medical practitioner.
Another man is in critical condition at a medical facility.
In a statement on Tuesday, Assistant Commissioner of Police Luke Defreitas disclosed that investigators have been pursuing leads since the incident.
He hoped the leads would soon bring the investigators closer to making arrests.
“We will spare no effort or resource to ensure that the perpetrators are expeditiously brought to justice. Such lawlessness cannot and will not be tolerated,” Defreitas warned.
He also sent a strong message to enablers.
“The enablers who harbour those criminal elements are, in our view, worse than those who pull the trigger. Because of you, crime persists,” the senior police officer declared.
He also appealed to the public for assistance in tracking down the shooters.

“Police Seek To Allay Public Fears After Brazen Shooting”
WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO CHANGE TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING IN THE FUTURE?
WE NEED RAPID RESPONSE & PATROL UNITS SPREAD OUT AROUND EACH DISTRICT WITH REALTIME COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN NEARBY UNITS. IF A SHOOTING HAPPENS IN AN AREA, NEARBY UNITS SHOULD COLLAPSE ON THAT AREA WHILE PREVENTING SUSPECTS FROM ESCAPING.
Cameras were recently placed all over the city, surely one or two must have captured the culprits, also nearby establishments have cameras, forget the so called ‘human rights lawyers’ , who are in reality the “enablers of the perpetrators’, and make all images public!
Sir your words didn’t alleviate my fears 2 years ago, so these words you saying now is another way saying it’s under investigations. So go home and work you and the force will keep us safe. Bunch ** bs to the highest degree. You’ll not organize and the whole country seeing this and now after a day daylight shooting in the middle of town between 2 and 3 pm on a Monday and you saying there is no need for my caca to be half mass. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Yeah man it under investigation code for WPC……..
Lucian Lowgrade is quiet while his failure of a boss keeps burning the state’s money on a corrupt police force which is not working. Lucian Lowgrade is quiet while his failure of a boss keeps talking about strengthening the laws. The laws will patrol the streets, the laws will do the forensic and investigative work needed to get credible evidence, the laws will apprehend the criminals.
@ oh really
… “WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO CHANGE TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING IN THE FUTURE?”
Seems is you alone that can prevent crime!!!
We have to be realistic and stop getting “smart” ideas from Hollywood shows. There is no government, no human, no law l, no system that can stop a man from killing another!!! What we can do is to have things in place to do 2 things
1) to try to make would be perpetrators think twice before acting through strict penalties like hanging, death by drowning in the harbour, injecting with gromaxone or touchdown or the guillotin.
2) an efficient pursuit system where cameras, witness statements, forensics, etc could be used with unwavering support from the court system.
@George, the law is not the problem, the problem is the police force. You cannot apply penalties to a criminal if you cannot apprehend them. You cannot apply the law in the courts if you do not have sufficient evidence. Who’s job is it to get the evidence? Is it the Judge? No, its the investigative unit of the police force. My ideas about rapid response units, real-time communication and more police presence absolutely make sense because by the time the police show up the culprits are long gone and the crime scene has already been contaminated by the public.
Less than 30% of murders are being solved every single year, this shows that justice is not present in our country. How many cold cases in total are there for the last decade? The police force is not working efficiently and you know it.
When the police start doing their jobs better by apprehending more criminals, using better methods for crime detection, and evidence gathering, future troublemakers will think twice about breaking the law.
You expect tourists to get off the ships in Castries??? With this brazen violence, inept police and legal system, and pathetic medical care? You’ve got to be kidding. Only the ignorant who don’t read what is going on in your country would disembark.
The police are asking for help, and for anyone with information to come forward, but when they are giving their official reports, they use the term “intelligence driven operations”, or “acting on intelligence”, so the whole world would know that somebody gave them information, how absolutely stupid and pathetic! Why the need to use these terms? Why not just give the facts of the operations? Yet still they expect the people to provide information on criminal activities!
“We will spare no effort or resource to ensure that the perpetrators are expeditiously brought to justice”
Sounds excellent. GodSpeed.
This madness have to stop …the PM needs to put together a SERIOUS task force to deal with crime …some of the these cops spend their time courting school girls in uniform rather than serve and protect .
