Saint Lucians will soon access essential medical and surgical care through a collaborative mission spearheaded by the Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs, in partnership with the Ministry of External Affairs.
This initiative is led by the United States Military Medical Mission Lesser Antilles Medical Team (LAMAT) and the Republic of China (Taiwan). Scheduled to run from Monday, February 24, to Friday, March 7, the mission aims to provide advanced healthcare services, strengthen local medical expertise, and foster collaboration between visiting and local healthcare professionals.
The mission will feature a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including vascular surgeons, general surgeons, cardiologists, dental specialists, anesthesiologists, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals.
Along with delivering critical medical services, the team will supply medical equipment, medication, and other essential resources. Surgical procedures will be performed at the Owen King European Union (OKEU) Hospital and Saint Jude Hospital, while specialised dental and cardiology services will be provided at OKEU and wellness centres in Anse La Raye and La Clery.
Chief Medical Officer Dr Sharon Belmar-George noted the dual focus of the initiative.
“This initiative is not just about providing medical and surgical care; it is about building capacity within our local health sector. Training sessions will be held for local medical officers, prioritising emergency and advanced trauma management, while specialists from OKEU and Saint Jude Hospital will collaborate with visiting experts. This collaboration enhances the skills of our healthcare teams and improves patient outcomes,” she said.
Dr Belmar-George reaffirmed the Ministry of Health’s dedication to ensuring continuity of care for patients. She assured that all visiting medical staff had undergone thorough vetting to meet local legal requirements.
“Additionally, our national health practitioners will work alongside the visiting teams, ensuring that patients receive follow-up care as needed. This mission represents a significant step forward in strengthening our health system and addressing critical health needs across the island,” the chief medical officer said.
Residents are encouraged to register for these services to ensure access. Registration for cardiology interventions will be open from February 3 to February 18, at wellness centres, polyclinics, community hospitals, and private practices. Dental service registration will be available at local dental clinics from February 3 to February 21.
The Ministry of Health has assured the public that visiting medical staff have been thoroughly vetted to meet local legal standards. National health practitioners will collaborate closely with the visiting teams, ensuring patients receive follow-up care as needed.
“The Ministry remains committed to continuity of care for patients. This mission represents a significant step forward in strengthening our health system and addressing critical health needs across the island,” Dr Belmar-George added.
As part of the initiative, a health fair will take place in Dennery from March 5 to 6. Details will be announced closer to the date.
The Ministry of Health expressed deep gratitude to the US Military, the Republic of China (Taiwan), and all local and international partners contributing to this mission.
The sooner the better 🙏
