Saint Lucia End U17 CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying Campaign with 5-0 Win

Team Saint Lucia finished their Under-17 CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying Campaign on a high with a thumping 5-0 victory against the Cayman Islands on Saturday, though not qualifying for the next stage.

The final group H encounter at the Estadio Cementos Progreso in Guatemala City, Guatemala, showcased the team’s talent in what has been an otherwise disappointing run.

In the first half, Dervaj Edward struck the opening goal in the 24th minute off a free-kick attempt. The lead would soon be extended by captain Thierry Morille who scored in the 27th minute from the penalty spot.

More goals were to come after the interval, as Shevon Byron added a third for Saint Lucia in the 52nd minute for the Piton Boyz, slotting the ball away with a left-footed finish for his second in three games. A brace came from Traylan Henry, who placed his name on the scoresheet in the 60th minute and 76th minute.

With qualification for the 2025 Under 17 World Cup now officially out of reach, the focus will now be on preparations for the next tournament. Fortunately for the team, FIFA has announced there will be an Under-17 World Cup annually, rather than every two years.

Team officials have emphasised a renewed focus on structured development of athletes at this age group level, and not merely preparing them for tournament participation.
