Destructive Descarte Leads Dominant Opening Day for Windwards

Paced by homeboy Shadrack Descarte, Windward Islands Volcanoes hit 364-7 on Wednesday, the opening day of their fourth-round fixture in the 2025 Cricket West Indies (CWI) Four-Day Championship.

The Windwards are playing the Leeward Islands at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground. The home team are still in search of their first win in this year’s competition, after finishing second in 2024.

Descarte, the 27-year-old left-hander from Mon Repos, came into the match with 110 total runs from six innings across four fixtures. He more than doubled his career tally, hitting 119 from 188 balls, including 17 fours. His innings was briefly interrupted by rain when he was on 99, and the Windwards on 295-6, as he engineered a remarkable recovery.

Fast bowler Oshane Thomas ripped through the Windward Islands top order, taking Jeremy Solozano (6), Stephan Pascal (25), and Kavem Hodge (9). Justin Greaves accounted for captain Alick Athanaze to leave the men in green at 58-4 in the 16th over.

Descarte and Sunil Ambris took fresh guard and guided the batting team to 132. Their 74-run union was ended when Ambris became Thomas’ fourth wicket for 35 off 40. Gian Benjamin was dismissed for 30, following a 56-run stand with Descarte. But Ryan John’s coming together with Descarte was the real rallying point, as the two put on 145 runs for the seventh wicket.

The home team will hope to build on a very solid foundation on Thursday, as they seek to benefit from home advantage.
