Star Basketballer Nestor Takes Up New Challenge

Rising basketball star Megan Nestor won’t be extending her Wayland Baptist University school record for rebounds next season. The 6-4 pivot from the Saint Lucian fishing village of Canaries will be working to set records at a new school, after announcing her transfer to the University of North Texas on Wednesday. Nestor made the announcement via social media.

Nestor broke the WBU rebounding record twice in the last two seasons. She pulled down 417 boards in 2023-2024 and 430 in 2024-2025. The previous Flying Queens record for total rebounds in a season was 371.

The Saint Lucian star told St Lucia Times that she chose the Mean Green because of their record of grooming players for the professional ranks. She also  lauded the environment at UNT, noting that “it’s like a family over there.” She was sold on the programme once she heard from some of the current players.

It will be a big opportunity for Nestor, to move from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) to the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) with a higher level of competition and more eyes on her. She will have big shoes to fill, as senior forwards Tommisha Lampkin and Aniyah Johnson will both be graduating. Lampkin, a first-team All-American Athletic Conference player, was a double-double machine for the Mean Green, with 17 rebounds and 10 rebounds per contest this past season.

Under head coach Jason Burton, the UNT women have enjoyed the two winningest years in the programme’s history. This past season, they ended with a 25-9 record, and school records for most wins, most home wins and most conference wins in a single term.
