Saint Lucia has been confirmed to host the 2027 CARIFTA Aquatics Championships.
The decision was made on Tuesday at the CARIFTA Congress in Trinidad and Tobago.
Construction of Saint Lucia’s National Aquatic Centre is to get underway at Beausejour, Gros Islet, in the coming weeks, according to the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports. Minister Kenson Casimir had previously stated that construction would take approximately 18 months, giving the island plenty of leeway ahead of Easter 2027.
Saint Lucia has earned a record 12 medals at the XXXVIII CARIFTA Aquatic Championships. Saint Lucia Aquatics Federation president Eddie Hazell says the 2027 national team will be the biggest ever fielded.
He also told St Lucia Times that work will begin immediately upon his return home on Wednesday, adding that it will take a supreme effort from the government, the swimming fraternity, and the private sector to host the biggest meet ever on island.
Over 1 000 swimmers, supporters, and officials are expected to participate in CARIFTA 2027.
