Cana Neuro Makes History with Saint Lucia’s First Advanced Brain Tumour Surgery

Chief Neurosurgeon and CEO of Cana Neuro, Dr Curby Sydney, has performed Saint Lucia’s first brain tumour surgery using neuro-navigation and ultrasonic aspirator technology, marking a historic moment in the island’s medical history.

Cana Neuro, in partnership with Tapion Hospital, achieved the medical breakthrough by completing a series of pioneering brain and spine surgeries, further cementing Saint Lucia’s position as a centre of excellence in brain and spine care and setting a new standard for neurosurgical care in the Caribbean.

Neuro-navigation, often referred to as GPS for the brain, allows the surgeon to precisely map and navigate delicate brain structures in real time, minimising risk and enhancing accuracy during surgery. Paired with the ultrasonic aspirator, which uses high-frequency sound waves to gently break down and remove tumour tissue while sparing healthy brain matter, these tools represent the pinnacle of modern neurosurgical precision.

Dr Sydney, joined by Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon Professor Dr Roig Fabre, went on to perform the country’s first surgical treatment for Trigeminal Neuralgia, a debilitating nerve disorder. The procedure, a microcompression of the Gasserian ganglion, was carried out at Tapion Hospital and brought instant and life-changing pain relief to a patient who had endured facial agony for more than 20 years.

In the words of one grateful patient, who underwent the microcompression surgery: “This procedure has given me my life back. I never thought relief was possible without leaving the island.”

“This is only the beginning,” said Dr Sydney. “We’ve brought the tools, the talent, and the tenacity. Cana Neuro is not just following international standards—we are establishing them right here in the Eastern Caribbean.”

Founded in 2016, Cana Neuro has continually redefined what’s achievable in neurological care within the region.

Dr Sydney, who pioneered neurosurgery as a specialty in Saint Lucia in 2014,

continues to lead a revolution in access, precision, and outcomes. With every operation, Cana reinforces its place as a regional beacon for those seeking world-class brain and spine care—without compromise.
