Saint Lucia off to mixed start in CARICOM Chess Tournament

A team of four Saint Lucians is competing this week against the region’s best in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Classic Team Chess Tournament. The competition, featuring eight national teams, is being held at the Pegasus Suites and Corporate Centre in Georgetown, Guyana.

Candidate Master Kaieem Elizee, Woman Candidate Master Chelsea Wahid, Sixtus Gabriel and Kiara Lambert are facing off against 40 of the top players from across the Caribbean in a time-controlled round-robin. The inaugural event was held in March 2024, with the goal of fostering cultural exchange, sportsmanship and intellectual excellence.

Over the first two days of play on Tuesday and Wednesday, Gabriel, president of the Saint Lucia Chess Federation, defeated Guyanese Candidate Master Sachin Pitamber, but lost to Jamaican FIDE Master Joshua Christie.

Elizee beat Guyana’s Keron Sandiford and fell to Jamaica’s Shreyas Smith, a FIDE Master. Wahid overcame Guyana’s Aniyah Crouchman, but was undone by Jamaica’s Amy Stephenson. And aged just 13, Lambert came a cropper against Guyanese Woman Candidate Master Sasha Shariff and Jamaica’s Kaia Gayle.

Play resumes on Friday after a sightseeing tour and blitz tournament on Thursday. Other contending teams are hosts Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, Suriname, Dominica and Barbados.

The FIDE-rated CARICOM Classic is being held biennially, with the next scheduled for 2027.
