Swimmers Fayth Jeffrey and Tristan Dorville have started their campaigns at the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships, which commenced on Wednesday at the Otopeni Olympic Aquatics Complex in Romania.
The six-day event has drawn nearly 900 athletes from 121 national federations to the city of Otopeni, located just north of the capital, Bucharest.
Fayth Jeffrey, 15, delivered a gusty performance in the women’s 100m freestyle. Swimming from Lane 1, she finished sixth in her heat but smashed her personal best with a time of 1:02.33, taking 83rd place overall. This significant improvement from her 1:03.00 seed time earned her 570 World Aquatics points. Jeffrey, who was born in Vieux Fort, currently attends Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, Maryland.
Tristan Dorville, 18, a Virginia Tech freshman who previously trained at Bolles Academy in Florida, competed in the men’s 100m butterfly. He clocked 55.43 seconds, finishing just 0.3 seconds off his personal best to secure 33rd place overall and 710 points. Dorville placed 10th in his heat while competing from Lane 9.
The competition is far from over for the Saint Lucian duo. Jeffrey is set to compete in four more events: the 50m and 100m breaststroke, the 200m individual medley, and the 50m freestyle. Dorville will also return to the pool for the 50m butterfly and the 50m and 100m freestyle events.
The World Junior Swimming Championships is a global biennial competition for the sport’s top emerging talent, featuring swimmers between the ages of 14 and 18.
