Young Saint Lucian Cricketing Talent Shines in CPL Early Days

The Republic Bank CPL has become a showcase for young Saint Lucian talent.

In the Kings’ recent loss, two local lads gave good accounts of themselves. Fast bowler Keon Gaston, 22, earned praise from legend Kieron Pollard after claiming his first T20 wickets – those of star players Andre Russell and Nicholas Pooran. Ackeem Auguste, who was moved down the order in favour of more naturally aggressive batters, proved his power with a quickfire 20 not out off nine deliveries.

Their exploits were significant enough to be highlighted by Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre during a press briefing..

“There’s some young Saint Lucians doing pretty well [like] Gaston,” the prime minister said. “When Pollard congratulates you for bowling a ball, you did well, [because] Pollard takes no prisoners. Then there’s also Ackeem Auguste, who also came out and showed some mettle in the dying stages.

“We have three more matches, Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. I hope we can do well in these matches. I want Saint Lucians to come out in their numbers… I wish Daren and the Saint Lucia Kings all the best.”

It must also be noted that Saint Lucian McKenny Clarke, who debuted for the Trinbago Knight Riders in their game against the Kings on Saturday night, was instrumental in getting his new franchise over the line.

Although his primary role in the TKR is as a bowler, Clarke hit two lusty sixes in the final over, boosting his team’s total to a defendable score.

He is being guided by none other than TKR head coach Dwayne Bravo, the CPL’s all-time leading wicket-taker. In an interview with St Lucia Times, Clarke revealed that Bravo has been actively mentoring him, focusing on refining his skillset and improving his execution on the field.
