Nestor’s rebounding, defence propel UNT past Tulane

Only six players in Division I women’s basketball have reached the 25‑rebound mark this season, and Megan Nestor owns half of those performances. The Saint Lucian senior hauled in 28 more against Tulane in the University of North Texas’ 56–47 win.

Her latest board‑crushing outing, paired with a staunch defensive display, pushed the Mean Green to 14–11 and delivered their third win in four games.

In a career-high 38 minutes, the 6-4 pivot added 10 points and three steals. Her fifth 20-rebound game of the season would have broken both the programme and conference records for boards in a game if not for her 31 against Texas Southern back in December.

Nestor has now recorded a double-double in 11 of her last 12 games and is averaging 13.5 points per game alongside 16.8 rebounds per contest during league play.

The Valentine’s Day outing also increased Nestor’s season rebound total to 359, jumping her from fourth to second most in program history. She is just six boards shy of breaking Sharon Shelton’s all-time record of 364, which has been standing for nearly 50 years.

“What Megan’s doing on the rebounds is just absolutely phenomenal,” said head coach Jason Burton. “More than just the boards, I thought she was fantastic as far as making plays. She had some big plays in our press. She had some big deflections that led to steals, or she got the steal herself.”

UNT improved to 8-5 in league play. They held Tulane to just 33 per cent from the field and 3-of-19 on three-pointers, resulting in UNT’s lowest point total allowed in a league game since joining the American Conference.

“It was close for the majority of the game and could have gone either way,” Burton said. “We did a great job of closing it out.”
