The St. Lucia Divers Association will be hosting a Lionfish Derby on Sunday 27th September 2015 as one of the control methods for the spread of the invasive Lionfish. This Derby is sponsored and supported by The Fisheries Department, The SLHTA, Sugar Beach Resort, The Windjammer Landing, The SMMA and REEF International.
There will be teams of divers from, Sugar Beach, Anse Chastanet, Action Adventure Divers, The SMMA, Eastern Caribbean Diving, Dive St. Lucia, Sandal Dive Center and Sandals Grande participating. There are at least two groups of private individuals who have indicated that they will be participating.
There will be two landing points for the Derby; one will be at the Fisheries complex in Soufriere and the other will be at the Windjammer Landing’s jetty. The action will start at 8:00am and run until 12:00pm, at which point all the hunters should be in.
There will be a prize of EC$1000.00 for the group with the most fish, there will also be other prizes for the largest fish and the smallest fish shot and a few others also.
The Lionfish is an invasive species in our waters and if left uncontrolled they can deplete out regular fish supply, leading to death of the coral reefs. Derbies are one of the effective ways of controlling the spread of the Lionfish.
