Legal protection urged for whistle blower Public Servants

Political hopeful, Doctor Andre Matthew, has called for the enactment of legislation to ensure whistleblower protection for public officers as a means of putting a stop to corruption.

Matthew also wants all Saint Lucians to be granted freedom of information.

In a statement today, he disclosed that unfortunately most public officers do not blow the whistle when they witness unlawful activity.

“They are afraid of retribution or victimization from high ranking officials. Public officers are cognizant that they have no whistle blower protection,” Matthew asserted.

He observed that Government officials also use the staff orders to further intimidate and muzzle public officers.

“These codes of conduct place a blanket restriction on all civil servants, forcing them to remain silent,” Matthew observed, while noting that in their 2014 human rights report, the US chided governance in Saint Lucia stating, “…corruption continued to be a problem.”

“ Public servants are our eyes and ears in government offices. They must be encouraged to report any perceived wrongdoings,” Matthew concluded.
