The Saint Lucia Autism Awareness Conference which is scheduled for Saturday October 17th, will take place at the St. Joseph’s Convent from 9:00 am – 4:30 pm. The conference will seek to emphasize the importance of early intervention, provide support and resources for families, identify the needs of families and educators dealing with individuals with autism and also educate families and persons in the community on strategies for managing behaviors of individuals with autism.

Organizer of the event Dr. Delia Samuel, a parent of two young autistic boys, in commenting on the initiative said, “My hope is that the hosting of this Autism Conference will provides an opportunity for assistance for families, caregivers and educators of those special ones such as financial support, training, rehabilitative and health care services and that our St. Lucian society will have a deeper awareness and appreciation for those challenged individuals.” Dr. Samuel added further “Unfortunately, as a country, St. Lucia lacks the awareness and resources that persons need to effectively care for children with autism. With the increasingly alarming rate of Autism cases, we believe it is absolutely imperative that our St. Lucian community be educated on how we deal with this disorder collectively and ensure that as a society, we provide equal opportunity for children and families affected by autism. We are therefore more than happy to partner with the organizers of the St. Lucian Autism Awareness conference to assist in educating the masses on such a grave issue. “
