Soufriere Mayor, Darnell Bobb, has spoken of several lessons to be learnt from the recent devastating fire in the town.
In comments invited by the Times, Bobb said the disaster had highlighted an appreciation for building codes and ensuring the structural integrity of buildings.
“I think we need to install fire prevention devices to alert us quickly to fires and ensure that things like fire hydrants and fire equipment are always functioning properly,” the Mayor said, adding that there was also need for property owners to insure their properties.
He told the Times that inadequate insurance would make the recovery effort a lot more difficult.
Bobb said efforts are ongoing to provide relief to those who were affected by the blaze, including the provision of finance, food, clothing and accommodation, as investigations continue in the disaster that damaged or destroyed several commercial and residential buildings.
A meeting was scheduled for today with the affected individuals to plan for the medium and long term
“Certainly as we go forward we will have to pay a lot more attention to how we rebuild especially in central business districts,” the Soufriere Mayor told the Times.
