With Saint Lucia Police confirming fifty-six reported rapes so far for this year, including the gang rape of two teenaged girls recently in the North of the Island, Gros Islet MP, Emma Hippolyte has said that women must always be on their guard.
However Hippolyte asserted that females cannot live in a situation in which they always have to look over their shoulder.
“We have a right to be free in our own country,” she said.
According to Hippolyte, who is also Minister of Commerce, violence is something that must not be condoned.
She described rape as a crime that is committed by persons who are “really sick”, and declared that as a country, Saint Lucians need to sit and determine how the matter ought to be addressed.
