This week November 16th -20th is recognized as CHILD WEEK in Saint Lucia as we mark two important days on the calendar, November 19th, World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse and November 20th Universal Children’s Day.
Abuse and Violence against children is a major concern as it continues to exist everywhere, at home, in schools, on the playground, in our churches and in the wider society.
It is important for us to be reminded that we have a duty of care to our children and therefore have a responsibility to protect them from all forms of violence and abuse in all settings.
In light of the myriad of reports of violence against children, the Division of Human Services issues a CALL TO ACTION to every Saint Lucian to make prevention of abuse and violence against children a priority.
This year the Division of Human Services has embarked on two major activities to highlight Child Week. On Tuesday November 17 the Division will be conducting a Sensitization workshop for Early Childhood Educators on Child Abuse at Coco Palm Conference Room.
On Thursday 19th and Friday 20th the Division of Human Services in collaboration with UNICEF and the Saint Lucia Social Development Fund (SSDF) will be hosting a Child Research Symposium which will feature students from secondary schools across the island who will be presenting on social research using the local context. The symposium will be held at the Bay Gardens Hotel under the auspices of Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy, Governor General of Saint Lucia.
