Allen Chastanet says Saint Lucia jeopardizing its relations with the West in Walid Juffali affair

The leader of the opposition United Workers Party, UWP, Allen Chastanet, has warned that Saint Lucia is playing with fire in the Walid Juffali affair.

As a result Chastanet has called on the government to face the music and ask Juffali to resign forthwith as this country’s Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization, IMO.

“This government needs to do what is right,” Chastanet told the Times.

He said that he believes Saint Lucia is jeopardizing its relationship with Western countries on which it depends for economic support.

Chastanet, a former Tourism Minister, observed that the United States is Saint Lucia’s biggest tourist market, followed by Europe.

According to the UWP leader, even though the Saint Lucia Labour Party, SLP, government had a recent overhaul of its foreign relations policy, the policy has to be revisited because it is not working.

But didn’t Chastanet say that something about ALBA. He does not understand international relations and so should refrain from commenting on such matters.

There is nothing wrong with the UWP leader’s position on this issue. He is fulfilling his duty in opposition. He has presented (that which is widely accepted in debates as) a hypothetical syllogism, which, is a valid logic used in arguments. For example, if I take a Route 3b bus, I will get to Jacmel. Premise and conclusion.

Now, judging from the articles I’ve read , UWP is essentially saying that the Ambassador is a liability. On the contrary, SLP is saying that he is an asset. Both arguments seem based on hypothesizing at the moment.

In the interest of fairness and transparency, would it be possible for St. Lucia Times -as an independent source- to do an investigative piece, on the actual costs versus the actual benefits of having WJ as ambassador? That would be appreciated as we trust you to do a reliable job at it. Many thanks!
