Recalling that about two years ago the government of Saint Lucia had to take approximately 132 million dollars off the books of the Water and Sewerage Company Inc, Prime Minister Doctor Kenny Anthony today warned that his administration would no longer be bailing out the water utility.
Anthony issued the warning during the launch today of an eighteen million US dollar rehabilitation project for the John Compton Dam.
“The people of Saint Lucia cannot constantly be asked to pay their dues to Wasco to ensure its viability. All of us have a collective interest and Wasco has to focus on its own efficiency to reduce costs where possible so most effective use can be made of tax payers contributions,” the Prime Minister declared.
He noted that in addition to the eighteen million US dollar rehabilitation project for the John Compton dam, a nineteen million dollar project will be launched in Vieux Fort tomorrow while the government has completed financing arrangements for a new water supply project in Dennery North.
“When you put all of this together it is really a huge investment by the government of Saint Lucia, and I say the government of Saint Lucia because the reality is that the CDB would not lend WASCO any money unless the government of Saint Lucia provides a guarantee for that. I expect Wasco to honour the arrangement, that is while the government of Saint Lucia provides a guarantee, they pay the loan,” Anthony said.
The Prime Minister said he wanted to make it clear that this time there will be no bailing out of WASCO want to make that very clear, this time there will be no bailing out.
“ I have had enough of bailing out of Wasco,” Anthony told the launching ceremony, while urging WASCO to get its house in order and conduct its business with efficiency.
