Further to declaring the economy is on the rebound, Prime Minister Kenny Anthony’s collection of “wisdom” and the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP), a socialist “party of substance”, are engaging in mind stretching that the national economy is on the way to recovery, attracting local and foreign investment. Even to report that, his administration has surprised everybody.
With a sort of bemusement, the power of trust and credibility that is actualized only when word and deed have not parted company share a compelling insight. “The IMF will not be allowed to dictate the economic policy of this country. I believe that fundamentally, where economic policy is concerned the government of Saint Lucia must not be dictated to by anybody. It is worth paying for. I value my freedom.” ~ Kenny Anthony In an era of enlightened common sense, Saint Lucians are not surprised by the customary fashion of SLP’s modern socialist misrepresentation and deception. We’ve been down that road before, where by ideology run over by fiscal deficit was built on prank economic theories.
“Credibility is the foundation of leadership… if you don’t believe in the messenger, you won’t believe in the message.” ~ Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, The Leadership Challenge. This time, the views expressed in the IMF staff concluding statement, particularly paragraphs 1 and 8, of the 2015 Article IV Mission, which by the way “do not necessarily represent the views of the IMF’s Executive Board” was a happy meal, good enough for Kenny Anthony to put on his anti-imperialist ideology blindfold. So who’s surprised at surprising himself to trust what the IMF tells him to change his character and adjust ideological rhetoric, in an attempt to acclaim credibility heading into the general election?
But all indications the SLP anti-imperialist ideology is par for the course. The backstage strategy is a political craft, to lend improvement to legendary credibility. To understand this perverse political craft the remnants are hidden in statist hegemony. Statism is the belief that the state should control either economic or social policy, or both, to some degree; hitherto, the leadership and socio-economic decision-making to bring into being the semblance of a plan to achieved sustainable economic expansion.
Still, wasn’t the actual campaign promise to generate economic growth, new businesses, new jobs, political stability and robust representation?
In fact, the evidence proves otherwise.
Optimism has become a stretch to establish clearly and convincingly that the ruling SLP government socialist ideological is absurd.
Equally, the opposition United Workers Party (UWP) conservatism is void of creativity, teamwork and persuasion to effective representation in its current form. The punishing result of this promotes the unjust expansion of perpetual poverty and backwardness, coupled with naïve measures that lack coherence and consistency.
Even so, the SLP government political propaganda machine is taking the lead, desperately trying to prepare citizens for nuances that imply: • “The issue of the credibility of the leadership of the respective parties will decide who wins or loses the next elections; • “Which of the parties will continue the economic recovery and ensure there is a downward movement in unemployment and investment coming to this country and look after the economic fundamentals? • “There is a ‘deeper issue’ relating to which political party has the courage to bring about reforms in the health sector; • “We have to transform the health sector and that is going to be a major issue in the next general elections, so ultimately it will be a test of credibility.” ~ Kenny Anthony The dilemma supporting this narrative is the precedent to countless indecisions on universal health care (UHC) and the opening of two new hospitals. The long overdue implementation takes a multi-faceted approach of who may have crony connections with their governments.
If you think about it, the aura of “nationalistic government” doesn’t suffer from secret arrangements and the dishonour to be bitten at the bar (Cabaway) of public opinion (since the Court of Justice is non-functional) if they don’t operate in the dark on economic matters, social values and foreign policy. Genuine development is about people and the ability to act intelligently to source capital and labour in an investment climate that is encouraging and competitive. And not simply adhere to views that reflect hostility with devious tendency to provoke discord.
Therefore, it is not difficult to understand why the SLP socialist brand of statist hegemony coincides with the thought process to align with countries that are unable to add value to Saint Lucia’s reputation and national interest. Adding to this mix, crisis existence, judgement and ethics are indifferent to the country’s potential and wasting valuable resource in the shadow of divisive politics. But, in a culture where the pathologically delusional are proudly valued to sound civil, credibility of political leaders worthy of reflection as pre-election rhetoric makes adjustments to evolving principles.
Here’s my point.
Guiding Saint Lucia forward demands a new approach to alternative economic recovery and strategic advancement programs that foster shared prosperity, justice and equality to emphasize and reinforce the country’s potential. After all, to point into the future with rejuvenation, direction and vigour, the basic truth requires SLP’s removal from office and, besides that, the equally ineffective UWP. Their replacement would take the form of a bipartisan progressive coalition that is, by its very origin and development, conduct and character, truly representative of governance, development and encouraging to people and commerce, at home and abroad. With that decision, national objectives for transformation in the marketplace could take the shape of: • Science, Technology, Energy and Maths (STEM) to help restore confidence on aspects affecting everyday life; climate change and innovation the world rely on: • Refine managerial expertise and business models to Increase trade, farmland and food production to meet present emergencies; • The 10-15-30 concept! 10% cut in the cost of electricity; 15% cut in government operational cost; 30% reduction in the food import bill. (2011 Soufriere, LPM campaign poster SSAP/MAT); • Genuine communication (public liaison) that is responsive to democratic rights of freedom for objective, accurate and constructive analysis to address critical domestic and global issues; • Focus on collective security to attain stability, freedom and the advancement of livelihood; • Strengthen institutions to lead, innovate, negotiate bilateral and multilateral opportunities with legal authority to translate policy into action, and deliver national priorities to the functioning of democracy; • Make use of multi-faceted approaches to instruments of capital markets, insurance, hedge funds pension funds and other financial instruments supporting robust economic growth.
