Opposition says Saint Lucia has lost its leadership role in tourism

The opposition United Workers Party (UWP) says Saint Lucia has lost its leadership rolein tourism, and has now become a follower.

Former Minister of Communications, Works, Transport and Public Utilities, Guy Joseph, told a News Conference today that Saint Lucia continues to lag behind the rest of the Caribbean.

According to Joseph, this is both in terms of infrastructural development and the granting of incentives.

“During the previous UWP government we were the leaders in the region, the ones who set the pace, but today we have become a follower rather than a leader, “the Castries South East MP asserted.

According to him, Saint Lucia must now play catch up.

Joseph spoke of Barbados, Grenada and Antigua, which he said had made changes in the area of incentives to become more competitive.

However he lamented that the current government of the Saint Lucia Labour Party refuses to state its position on tourism incentives.

Sorry. Just really cannot agree with that. I think that every hotel in st Lucia will say that we are in boom time with the last 4 years steadily rising. Record bookings for next year. Just saying.

Truth and David has missed the point. Let us compare the other islands increase in tourism with ours. We were definitely the leader before. What has happened with ST. Lucia is that, this present government is using the Chastanet policies which worked perfect during the global economic crisis. The economic crisis has ended and that policy will still work hence the increase they are boasting about. However, the government has not taken the next best step. For example, the value of the Canadian dollar has decrease compared to 2008. What has been done to attract the Canadian tourist?
