A well known City squatter, identified by her pseudonym, “Jah Love”, is believed to have been responsible for a fire last night on Jeremie Street.
The fire was lit in the garbage dump opposite the Recaii building.
A spokesman for the Saint Lucia Fire Service (SLFS) told the Times that the thick smoke from the fire enveloped a large part of the Jeremie Street area and could be smelled from as far away as the Fire Service Headquarters.
Firemen responded with one fire truck and were able to extinguish the blaze.
However the official expressed concern that the fire could easily have got out of hand and spread.
“This person is obsessed with starting fires,” the official lamented, adding that several reports about her behaviour have been made to the Police, to no avail.
He recalled that last night’s incident, which occurred at about midnight, was not the first time that “Jah Love” is suspected to have started a fire in the City.
According to the official, the last such incident occurred recently on Darling Road near Rambally’s Funeral Home, when she is reported to have started a fire that threatened a home in the area.
