Members of the Micoud Hustlerz Basketball Team were delighted when on Monday December 14th, 2015, they were presented with a brand new basketball kit along with basketball nets donated by Mr. Daren Verneige. In donating the kit, Mr. Verneige, himself an ex member of the Micoud Hustlerz basketball team, and an avid sports enthusiast who migrated to the United States said, “I promised the guys that if they won the ongoing South Coast Basketball League, I would sponsor a new set of uniforms. Although they were knocked out during the playoffs stage of the tournament, I saw it fitting to reward their hard work and to still provide them with the new uniforms. The current set has been in use for over five years and needed to be changed. It is a small way of giving back to the team and the community.”
This donation is not the first of its kind, as since his migration Mr. Verneige has provided balls, nets and shoes to members of the Micoud Hustlerz team. Nadege Jn Baptiste, President of the Micoud Youth and Sports Council who was very effusive in her praise for the donation by Mr. Verneige lamented the fact that sometimes our sportsmen migrate and forget about the community and individuals who gave them their start. “I wish to thank Daren for this donation as it shows that he has not forgotten the club. He was one of the key players on the Micoud Hustlerz team and now he has seen it fitting to make a contribution to the development of the sport in the community. I encourage other Micoudians in the diaspora to do the same.”
From winning only one game during their first foray into the St. Lucia Premier League Basketball Tournament with Daren being a key player on the team, to capturing second place in Division 1 during the 2014 basketball season and also in the first edition of the South Coast Basketball League tournament, the Micoud Hustlerz have seen its basketball program make tremendous strides.
Having been knocked out of this year’s edition of the South Coast Basketball League the team will debut their new kit during the 2016 National tournament hosted by the St. Lucia Basketball Federation.
