Independent Senator laments “petty politics.”

Independent Senator, Doctor Stephen King, has lamented that Saint Lucians are caught up with petty politics, rather than discuss genuine developmental issues and national politics that transcend political parties.

King said that such a discussion would help ensure the best use of public monies and resources and cause representatives of the people to follow public opinion based on “great debate” and knowledge.

In this regard he expressed the opinion that the media have a major role to play.

“I really wish for instance that even parliamentary debates were more broadcast and the media took more clips and excerpts to really create an awareness and consciousness in our people,” King told reporters outside parliament, as he arrived for a meeting of the Senate yesterday.

He asserted that essentially people need to understand that the politics, party or otherwise, is in their hands if they are more united in getting what they want.

Petty politics will be a characteristic of our political landscape until we break the cycle of “jobs for the boys/girls” where incompetent party hacks are given responsibility and authority for important public sector institutions and projects. We need to establish a meritocracy in our nation instead of the usual red or yellow oligarchies.
