On Tuesday 22nd December, the St Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association presented the Ministry of Social Transformation, Local Government and Community Empowerment a check for $80,000 in support of the Community After School Program. The Community After School Program conceived in 2009 offers life skill classes, academic support, sports, agriculture and art and craft classes to children in some of St Lucia’s most impoverished communities.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Social Transformation, Ms Juliana Alfred, applauded the commitment of the SLHTA’s Tourism Enhancement Fund to the program and noted that the Fund had increased their donation by $10,000 from last year.
Sanovnik Destang, Chairman of the Tourism Enhancement noted that this initiatives falls closely with the goals of the TEF. “Tourism product development and socio-economic development go hand in hand. If we build a society we would enjoy living in; which is safe, prosperous and secure, it will only serve to nurture our tourism product”.
The SLHTA’s sponsorship of this program will benefit close to 1000 children in fifteen centres island wide. The Association also took the opportunity to present the Ministry with a number Christmas hampers that will benefit needy families including the children from the Program who were welcomed at the Press Conference today.
