British national seeking reunion with father

A British national is seeking to be reunited with his father after more than forty years.

Damon Ian Gilbert has been identified as the son of Sylvia Rita Hadlow and Joseph Gilbert whose marriage took place between 1969-71

According to information provided to the Times, Sylvia returned to the UK just before the birth of Damon due to pregnancy complications.

Damon was born on 9 January 1972, at Redhill hospital, Redhill, Surrey, England, according to the information provided.

Shortly after the birth Sylvia is reported to have returned to St Lucia with Damon.
“Unfortunately due to the breakdown of the marriage Sylvia left St Lucia and returned to the UK with Damon age 6 months old,” the Times was informed.

It is believed that Joseph was or is a hotelier and had another child, possibly a son named Michael from a previous relationship, the Times was told.
The only information that Damon received from Sylvia was very limited, as she never spoke of Joseph, it is reported.

“Damon a father of one son and two daughters, he has always thought about his own father; to find and have the opportunity to meet him would be simply amazing,” Damon’s partner, Sandra said in an email to the Times.

I feel that a child should always know who his/her parents are regardless of the any relationship issues between the parents.
Good luck with your search man and I hope you tell us about the reunion which may be quite emotional for both of you.

Reply to the above no unfortunately we don’t know what village It would be good if Joseph Gilbert would contact the St Lucia Times. If you know of some Gilbert’s perhaps you could tell them about the story.

    Kind regards

Damon’ mother was only in st Lucia a short time. His mother never really spoke of the past therefore he has very limited information. It is believed that his father was a hotelier and he would be approximately late 60s early 70s it Damin’s birthday today and he is 44. I know this is very limited information we just hope his father reads this newspaper. Kind regards Sandra??

Even though the mother hardly spoke of the father do you know of any of her old friends she may have confided in? Maybe a little tidbit of information about people she may have known in St. Lucia or where she lived might be extremely helpful in narrowing down the search. What about his mother’s relatives in the UK, maybe they remember something from long ago. If you can get to that marriage certificate a few more names would increase the odds. Was Sylvia Rita Hadlow her name at the time of their marriage?

Yes that was her name at the time of marriage. We are coming over to St Lucia in November, until then we will try and find some more information to aid this search.
