The Saint Lucia Basketball Federation was the recipient of goodwill on New Year’s Eve, compliments an unexpected source.
A donation of 48 referee’s whistles was made to the organization by veteran sports commentator Joseph “Reds” Perreira on behalf of a Canadian based, Guyanese born basketball referee.
The individual, Bruce Fernandes is a former basketball player in the Guyanese League, during Perreira’s tenure as President of the Basketball Association.
Fernandes made contact with the broadcaster via email after reading his book “Living my Dreams” and upon meeting on a cruise to Saint Lucia sought ways in which he could assist in developing the sport in Saint Lucia.
Upon Reds’ recommendation the referee promised to provide whistles for use by basketball officials.
Fernandes also expressed his intention to conduct a referee’s clinic on island sometime in 2016.
SLBF President Leslie Collymore, on behalf of the Referees and Officials Association welcomed the gesture, noting that the whistles will go a long way in helping achieve the organisation’s developmental and tournament goals.
The Federation would also like to express immense gratitude to Mr. Perreira for facilitating the donation.
The handover was made at the Bay Gardens Hotel.
