The prison remand population at the Bordelais Correctional Facility (BCF), continues to be a source of concern for prison authorities.
BCF spokesman, Clive Jules observed however that the authorities are doing all they can to assist.
Jules cited among the measures that have been taken is having alternative venues for court hearings given the current renovation that is ongoing at the courthouse in Castries.
However he told the Times that the measures are still not creating a “dent” in the backlog of cases at the BCF.
According to Jules, restlessness among the remand population is one of the issues that Correctional Officers have to deal with, by regularly speaking with prisoners and the relevant authorities to deal with some of the cases.
There are currently 347 males on remand, compared to 254 males who have been sentenced.
Ten females are also on remand, compared to four who have actually been sentenced.
