Burglars try loading big safe into small car

Two burglars flew too close to the sun on Thursday, as they were caught attempting to load a 200-plus pound safe into a Toyota Camry.

The two men were attempting to stuff the man-sized safe into the back seat of a silver 2003 Toyota Camry.

According to Deputy Stephen Traeger, the safe appeared to be about 4.5 feet around. Safes of similar size found online are approximately 230 pounds.

The duo were spotted on a surveillance camera by the owner of the safe, who became aware of their presence from a motion-activated alarm which notified his cell phone.

The owner then notified the police.

The burglars, Joel Rene Perez and Oscar Perez, Jr., attempted to run, but were quickly apprehended.

The incident occurred in the 300 Block of Woodrose in San Marcos, Texas.

A third man was detained, as the owner thought he saw three burglars. That man was released when it was discovered that he was simply in the area and had no relation to the other two suspects.
