Debra Tobierre, government Senator and prominent Vieux Fort businesswoman, has challenged the leader of the opposition United Workers Party (UWP), Allen Chastanet, to come to her directly if he believes that she has engaged in any illicit activity.
Tobierre spoke against the backdrop of criticism by Chastanet of Prime Minister, Doctor Kenny Anthony, for publicly declaring that business people who did not want to see the UWP leader or his father, Michael in control of Saint Lucia, were paying the new salary of Jadia Jn Pierre Emmanuel.
Emmanuel recently resigned as Press Secretary to the Prime Minister to take up the post of Communications Director of the ruling Saint Lucia Labour Party.
In calling on the Prime Minister to say who the business people are, Chastanet had asked whether they were the same ones who gave Anthony true value when they presented him with a Prado vehicle.
Senator Debra Tobierre is the Managing Director of True Value Building and Hardware Supplies.
“I get the sense that Mr. Chastanet is really searching for things to say and he is really struggling with it, to bring a private business person into a discussion like that and also something that was put to rest many years ago,” Tobierre told reporters.
While admitting that she did not hear the comments of the UWP leader, she recalled that during the period of time that Doctor Kenny Anthony was not elected in 2006, he was approached by business people.
According to Tobierre, Anthony told them clearly that any contribution towards the purchase price of his Prado would have to be declared to the Integrity Commission before he accepted such a gift.
The Senator declared that the leader of the UWP could go to the Commission if he wants any clarification about what was done so many years ago.
“I think we keep straying away from the real issues at hand and somebody who is aspiring for a prestigious office should look at the integrity and honour of that office and not drag people into discussion like that to try to make their point,” Tobierre asserted.
