Independence celebrations continue in New York

NEW YORK, NY (February 17, 2016)—In observance of Saint Lucia’s 37th anniversary of independence, the Consulate General of Saint Lucia in New York has organized a number of celebratory events, throughout the month of February.

The next of these to take place is an Independence 37 flag-raising ceremony, scheduled for Friday 19, 2016, from 10:00AM, at Brooklyn’s Borough Hall, 209 Joralemon Street, Brooklyn.

Included on the program will be remarks by Hon. Julian Du Bois, Saint Lucia’s immediate past Consul General in New York, and Brooklyn Borough President Hon. Eric Adams. Several local elected officials representing the City of New York will also be in attendance.

The Independence 37 festivities will continue on Saturday, February 20, 2016, with a production of the play “Zingay,” to be performed by an all- Saint Lucian cast.

Produced by Marlon Gervis and Heat Wave Productions, the piece revolves around Caribbean folk tales featuring the Soucouyant and Obeah Woman characters.

“Zingay” was written by Trinidadian playwright Freddie Kissoon, and will be staged at the Brooklyn Music School Theater, 126 St. Felix Street from 8:00PM.

The next afternoon, Sunday, February 21, beginning at 2:30 PM, Independence 37 will be observed with an ecumenical service at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, 2530 Church Avenue in Brooklyn. Attendees are invited to a special reception following at the Saint Lucia House, 438 E 49 Street (between Church and Snyder Avenues).
