The Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) is pleased that the Government has once again delivered on a promise to the people of Saint Lucia.
On Tuesday, February 23, 2016, representatives from Secondary Schools were present to receive Laptops donated to the Government of Saint Lucia by the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan).
This year, Government will distribute 3,840 laptops, 550 desktop computers and 125 projectors under the “One Laptop Per Child” Initiative.
According to Party Chairman, Hon. Claudius Francis, this is not just a promise delivered, but a continuation of the education revolution started by the SLP in 1997. Mr. Francis said,
“Our record in education is clear. From the end of the shift system, to the construction of new schools, the introduction of Universal Secondary School Education, the creation of the National Skills Development Centre, the provision of bursaries and scholarships, to name a few, it is clear that through our ideas, initiatives and investments, the SLP has transformed the education sector in Saint Lucia.
The Laptop Program is not just the fulfillment of a promise, but a necessary and timely investment in our children, teachers, schools and by extension households.
We are proud that the SLP Administration has placed the Saint Lucian child on a level playing field with any child anywhere else in the world. The complimentary policies such as the island wide wifi initiative, the construction of community access centers and training of teachers will boost the value of such an investment and will augur well for the preparation of our students for the future.
Kudos to the Government of Saint Lucia for such a visionary and worthy initiative. “
The handing over ceremony for the equipment was held at the Marigot Secondary School.
Although the Opposition Parliamentarians were invited to attend and participate none were present.
It is a shame that even when the children benefit from national programs and initiatives, the UWP chooses to satisfy its petty political agenda over celebrating the benefits to the people of Saint Lucia.
