UWP: SLP CXC promise an election ploy

CASTRIES, Saint Lucia –Wednesday, March 23, 2016 – Once more Dr. Kenny Anthony and the St. Lucia Labour Party have introduced another ploy in an effort to cunningly attract voters.

Speaking at a public meeting held in Fond Assau, Babonneau Dr. Kenny Anthony made promises to bring relief on CXC fees.

How typical of Kenny Anthony to make promises which can only be fulfilled after the general election. Unfortunately, for St Lucians such promises by the SLP administration on the eve of an election are never fulfilled.

Why did Kenny Anthony wait until after this year’s CXC fees have already been paid? Why were these promises not made for the students sitting CXC this year? Is it only now that the St. Lucia Labour party is aware that parents cannot pay CXC fees?

On October 22nd, 2015 the UWP organized a protest in support of the restoration of subsidies directly benefiting education, which were reduced by Kenny Anthony and his Government.

During the UWP’s term, school feeding and transportation programmes were allocated $5 million, the SLP has since significantly reduced these subsidies to $3 million.

The SLP also made decisions to increase the fees at the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC). Even after such efforts the SLP government has not reversed these changes.

Dr. Kenny Anthony and the SLP Government is clearly out of touch with what is happening in St. Lucia. Poor people are already struggling to send their children to school as a result of this lack of subsidies.

If you walk around through many communities you will see that many children are running the street during school hours and not attending school.

It is well known that many poor children are already unable to attend school, so, how does Dr. Kenny Anthony expect them to perform well and to benefit from a grant which is based on their performance.

What is striking is that Dr. Anthony was not able to give any details of his ill-defined plan, which makes us question his sincerity on this issue. What we do know is that his plan lacks equality for students and their parents as only some will benefit.

The UWP urges Dr. Kenny Anthony and the SLP to have some regard and respect for hard working parents who make every effort to cover the fees of their children.

The SLP should take more seriously the education of our young people and STOP using it as a ploy for re-election.
