Prime Minister Doctor Kenny Anthony has signaled his government’s intention to appropriately honour Darren Sammy, who captained the West Indies T20 team that won the ICC twenty 20 World Cup finals.
“The humble Darren Sammy has made us proud and this region proud,” Anthony declared to ruling party supporters tonight during a rally to officially launch the Saint Lucia Labour Party’s Castries South East Candidate – Joachim Henry.
The SLP rally was broadcast live by HTS television.
The Saint Lucia Prime Minister said it has taken Darren Sammy and the region’s women cricketers to bring back some glory and honor to West Indies cricket.
Both the men and women West Indies T20 cricket teams became ICC Twenty20 World Cup Champions after defeating Australia and England by eight wickets and four wickets respectively.
“This country needs to say thanks,” the Saint Lucia Prime Minister asserted.
He disclosed that he has asked the Minister of Sports to ask Darren Sammy to allow Saint Lucia to welcome him in glory and to tell him thanks.
Anthony said once Sammy agrees, he wants this country to have the biggest celebration it has ever had.
However the Prime Minister said that Sammy’s wishes had to be respected, despite plans to communicate to him that Saint Lucia wants to receive him as someone who has made history for this country and the region.
He asserted that as Saint Lucia celebrates Darren, the country must also celebrate Johnson Charles who hails from Anse La Raye and who has also made this country proud.
“This celebration must be special for us because while the entire Caribbean will celebrate, for us the celebration must resonate in our hearts and our souls, because we know the trials and tribulations of Darren Sammy,” the Prime Minister told ruling party supporters.
He noted that despite obstacles, Sammy defied the odds and conquered, restoring cricket to its glory.
