An on line petition has been launched to dissolve the current West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and implement the recommendations of the CARICOM Cricket Review Panel.
The petition has a goal of five thousand signatures.
“This petition is a solidarity call to all Caribbean people, at home and abroad, to Rally ‘Round De West Indies and lobby for the implementation of the Recommendations by the CARICOM Cricket Review Panel,” a statement on the on line initiative said.
The statement noted that a significant part of the transformation includes the dissolution of the WICB board.
It observed that Caribbean people at home and abroad were inspired with fire in their hearts by the recent success of the West Indies Women’s and Men’s cricket team in the ICC World Twenty 20.
However, the statement noted that a dark cloud of poor governance by the WICB and the ongoing Players versus Board challenge have demoralized the Caribbean spirit, capturing negative headlines internationally and marginalizing some of the best cricket talent on the field.
“At the post-match interview, winning Captain Darren Sammy, full of emotion, shared his disappointment in the WICB,” the statement recalled.
Sammy, for whom the government here has announced plans to welcome home “in glory”, had used a post-match interview to indicate that he and his team felt disrespected by the WICB.
It was a reference to the lengthy and bitter pay dispute between players and officials that had put the West Indies’ World Twenty20 participation in doubt.
The WICB had publicly reprimanded Sammy by apologizing for his outspoken attack on Caribbean administrators after he led the team to victory over England in Sunday’s World Twenty20 final in Kolkata.
Amílcar Sanatan of Trinidad and Tobago started the on line petition to dissolve the WICB with a single signature.
As of today. April 5, 2016, the petition had attracted nearly four thousand of the goal of five thousand signatures.
