Guyana’s National Security Committee was summoned to an emergency meeting late yesterday afternoon, after Prison Wardens staged a sick out.
According to the Guyana Chronicle newspaper, thirteen of fifteen wardens did not show up for duty.
The newspaper reported being informed that the action by the wardens was sparked by reports of a planned prison break.
There were also reports, according to the newspaper, that guns were being thrown over the prison wall.
About a month ago seventeen prisoners were killed during a fire at the same prison.
A Commission of Inquiry is currently underway into that incident.
It is reported that since the fire, prison inmates have become bolder and wardens are fearful for their safety.
President David Granger has directed the Guyana Police Force to assist prison officers in manning the Camp Street facility and the Guyana Defence Force to assist in guarding the outer cordons of its precincts, the Guyana Chronicle reported.
