An average Atlantic Hurricane season has been predicted by the Tropical Meteorology Project at Colorado State University (CSU).
The initial forecast predicts twelve named storms.
Five of the storms are expected to become hurricanes, with two becoming major hurricanes according to reports.
The numbers exclude the rare Hurricane Alex in January.
“The numbers predicted for 2016 are very comparable to the total number of storms we saw in 2015 as well, which was considered to be a below-average year, primarily due to the influence of a strong El Niño event that is now weakening,” a report in the on line site, Surfline said.
Last year saw eleven named storms, four hurricanes and two major storms
