With the onset of another sea turtle nesting season, Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa partnered with the Department of Fisheries in staging an orientation and training workshop for its staff members on management of the sea turtle fisheries. The workshop exercise which was held on Thursday, 14th April, 2016 targeted staff drawn from the Kids Klub, Entertainment, Pools, Security, and Grounds Departments of the hotel.
The workshop was conducted by Ms. Yvonne Edwin and Ms. Shanna Emmanuel of the Fisheries Department and covered topics such as identification of various species and their tracks, nesting patterns, monitoring and documentation as well as information on the life cycle of sea turtles.
The orientation and training exercise provided staff members from key Departments with relevant skills and knowledge which empowers them to act as agents in advancing the conservation policies of the hotel. It is expected that through such training staff members will become naturally alert and extremely sensitive in responding to instances of nesting activity as well retrieval and release of disoriented or endangered hatchlings.
This annual orientation and training workshop forms part of an ongoing partnership between the Department of Fisheries and Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa which is geared towards conservation and sustainability of the turtle fisheries.
