New York, NY (April 20, 2016) – In observance of Autism Awareness Month, the Consulate General of Saint Lucia in New York will be hosting a special presentation on this timely topic, by Saint Lucian author Dr. Delia Samuel. Dr. Samuel will also be signing copies of her new book, Against the Odds: Inspiration for Parenting Children with Special Needs.
This event will take place on Sunday, April 24, 2016, at 3:00 PM, at the Saint Lucia House, 438 E. 49th Street, in Brooklyn, New York (between Church and Snyder Avenues).
In her book, Dr. Samuel gives practical, empathetic advice to parents and caregivers dealing with the challenges of raising children with autism.
Based on her own experience as the mother of two autistic children, it offers a recipe of love, humor, and faith.
Her decision to write the book, she says, is partially to express her feelings and thoughts, but mostly she seeks to help alleviate the feelings of frustration and helplessness she knows parents of children with disabilities suffer with.
Dr. Samuel’s book leaves the reader with a strong message of hope and optimism, despite the alarming increase in cases of autism worldwide. Her talk is sure to be of interest to parents, caregivers, medical professionals, educators, or anyone else who has been directly or indirectly affected by this growing epidemic.
A professor of mathematics for over twenty years, and currently a professor at Century College in Minnesota, Dr. Samuel holds a MPhil in Computer Science from the University of the West Indies, an M.S. degree in Mathematics, and a Ph.D in Mathematics from the University of Minnesota.
She is the author of four math textbooks for middle and high school students, all of which were published by Pearson PLC in the U.K. Dr. Samuel is the seventh of eight children, and a single parent living in Minnesota.
While all are invited, the Consulate General especially encourages Saint Lucians and friends of Saint Lucia in the New York City area to attend this important event, to support and pay tribute to yet another of our distinguished fellow citizens
