Saint Lucia police today discovered an AK 47 assault rifle in an abandoned building, reliable sources have told the Times.
The discovery was made in a building at Morne du Don/Balata, according to information obtained by the Times.
No ammunition for the rifle was discovered and no arrests were made.
The find is generating some concern in law enforcement circles.
However, one source who spoke to the Times on condition of anonymity, recalled that the incident today was not the first in which an assault rifle has been found by local police.
The source said that some years ago an M 16 rifle was discovered.
The AK 47 and associated models of the firearm remain the most popular and widely used assault rifles in the world.
They are known to be reliable under harsh conditions.
“The AK has excellent penetration when shooting through heavy foliage, walls or a common vehicle’s metal body and into an opponent attempting to use these things as cover,” according to Wikipedia.
