UWP congratulates Nurses

CASTRIES, Saint Lucia –Thursday, May 12, 2016 – The United Workers’ Party wishes to extend a Happy International Nurses Day to all the strong, resilient and hard-working nurses in St. Lucia.

On the occasion of International Nurses Day, the United Workers’ Party also wishes to stress the need for nurses to continue to contribute to developing strong and resilient health systems.

Nurses have operated as the single largest group of health professionals, with a presence in all settings.
Nurses have made a massive impact on the effectiveness of health systems by their promotion of improvements needed for quality health service delivery and systems strengthening.

It is our duty as a government in waiting to support the development of strong nursing leaders and policies to assist in the creation of a nursing cadre to meet the health challenges of the future.

International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world on 12th May, the birthday of Florence Nightingale.

Today is therefore a great opportunity for nurses and patients to truly celebrate their vocation and the huge difference they make in the lives of millions of people worldwide.

These are challenging times for nurses in St. Lucia, taking into consideration the conditions under which they are forced to operate at our public hospitals and health centres.

Nurses are burdened daily due to poor infrastructure, staff shortages, minimal medical supplies and minimum pharmaceutical supplies.

They are forced to operate out of make shift facilities such as St. Jude’s Hospital, hindering their ability to provide proper health care services.

Therefore, it is important today to return to the heart of nursing and reflect on the very special reasons why nurses do what they do.

The United Worker’s Party joins the country in wishing our nurses a Happy International Nurses Day.
