Archbishop: Stand behind the future leadership

As Saint Lucians vote in general elections today, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Archbishop Robert Rivas, has said that whatever the final results, prayers should be said for wisdom to stand behind the future leadership of this country.

Rivas spoke during a television address, in which he read a statement from the Saint Lucia Christian Council.

He appealed to the entire nation to pray for free and fair elections, as well as for peaceful and non-violent campaigning.

Rivas urged the electors to exercise their franchise with responsibility and dignity, as in the final analysis, the ballot box will reveal the direction that the nation wants to take.

“We cannot be serious about the way forward and our future as a nation without putting God at the centre, indeed at the forefront of all our plans strategies and dreams,” the Archbishop stated.

He said:

“We place June 6th and our future in God’s hands and thank all for wisdom and good citizenship.”

According to the Electoral Department, forty candidates representing four political parties – the ruling Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP), the main opposition United Workers Party (UWP), the Lucian Peoples Movement and the Lucian Green Party, will be presenting themselves for election.

The Electoral Department has also noted that an unprecedented seven women are among the candidates.

Polls will open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 6:00 p.m.

The election will be a straight fight between the SLP, led by Doctor Kenny Anthony and the UWP which has Allen Chastanet as leader.
