Theresa May: Saint Lucia opposition leader says wait and see

Opposition leader, Philip J. Pierre, believes a wait and see attitude ought to be adopted in regard to Theresa May, the new British Prime Minister.

May succeeded David Cameron on Wednesday.

Philip J. Pierre told the Times that Cameron paid more attention to foreign affairs and pledged money to the region for infrastructure and other development.

He described Cameron as being a politician who put foreignaffairs at the top of his agenda.

The Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) leader told the Times that with Theresa May, one is not sure.

However he asserted that one thing was certain, that the 59 year old British leader will have to oversee her country’s exit from the European Union after the ‘Brexit’ vote.

Pierre recalled that May was “temperate” on the matter of the vote to leave the European Union.

The Saint Lucia opposition leader noted that following the ‘Brexit’ vote the British pound had been decreasing in terms of its value against the US dollar.

The former Tourism Minister observed that this would affect the tourism industry in the short term.

Pierre told the Times that the region was a place where high end visitors vacation.

As a result he concluded that the slide in the pound may not affect them immediately.

However he raised concern about people from the region who have lived and worked in the UK and have now resettled in the Caribbean and depend on pensions.

He explained that their disposable income will be reduced.

Pierre contended that under the circumstances, a regional approach is necessary with decisions being made on a regional and rational basis.

He asserted that Caribbean Islands cannot go it on their own.

Theresa May served as Home Secretary for six years and is reported to be tough on immigration.

She is also reported to be a tough negotiator and a “steely” politician.
