Sarah Flood-Beaubrun speaks on abortion

Sarah Flood-Beaubrun, the MP for Castries Central, has been speaking about abortion.

Flood Beaubrun’s passionate opposition to a bill legalizing abortion under certain circumstances led to her dismissal as a government minister in 2004.

She was at the time, Minister of Gender Relations in a former Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) administration.

Sarah Flood-Beaubrun subsequently resigned from the SLP.

Now an MP in the current ruling United Workers Party (UWP) administration, she was asked by reporters whether she will be putting pressure on her colleagues in government to withdraw the abortion law.

Flood-Beaubrun did not answer the question directly.

Instead she asserted that the most effective way to deal with crisis pregnancies is by providing help to persons who have crisis pregnancies.

The newly appointed Minister in the Ministry of Finance, Economic Growth, Job Creation, External Affairs and the Public Service said she would like the government to provide support and help for women and mothers in crisis.

“That is the best way of dealing with abortions – providing alternatives,” the Castries Central MP declared.

She stated that the former labour administration did not do that.

Flood-Beaubrun said she would like to see support provided to families generally, including single mothers and fathers.

The minister is the founder of the Caribbean Centre for Family and Human Rights (CARIFAM).

On its website, CARIFAM describes Flood-Beaubrun as a woman who, throughout her career, has developed a reputation as a courageous fighter for the values she believes in.

According to CARIFAM, as Deputy Permanent Representative of Saint Lucia to the United Nations, she led CARICOM efforts to protect the family.
