SLP Says Mayers Appointment Contradicts UWP Manifesto Pledge

The Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) is questioning the judgement of Prime Minister Allen Chastanet in appointing UWP Chairman – Guy Mayers – as Saint Lucia’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (UK) despite an explicit UWP 2016 Election Manifesto (on Page 66) promise on “ending Political Patronage in the Foreign Service” and not using “the Foreign Service as a channel for distributing political favors.” Mayers’s appointment clearly contradicts another UWP promise.

What is even more disturbing about this appointment is that Mr. Guy Mayers was the Minister for National Security, who presided over the infamous “Operation Restore Confidence” (ORC)”, which has attracted the attention of the United Kingdom, and other countries in Europe and the United States of America (USA).

Under ORC, twelve (12) Saint Lucian citizens were allegedly killed by Police in highly suspicious circumstances, leading to the imposition of sanctions on Saint Lucia by the USA for human rights abuses under the Lehey Law and the suspension of all aid to the law enforcement agency.

The SLP believes that the appointment of Mr. Guy Mayers, the former, controversial Minister for National Security, to a diplomatic posting in the United Kingdom, a country, which has raised serious concerns over “Operation Restore Confidence”; represents a grave judgement error by Prime Minister Chastanet which

could compromise, complicate and further delay the resolution of this internationally embarrassing matter.
