Barbados: Gays reported happy this Crop Over

BARBADOS TODAY:-Gay rights activist Darcy Dear is reporting that, from all accounts, members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community who participated in the recently ended Crop Overseason were able to enjoy themselves without harassment or threats.

There have been cases in previous years of people being verbally and physically assaulted because of their sexual orientation, particularly as they revelled on Kadooment Day.

However, Dear told Barbados TODAY he was pleased that did not seem to be the case this time around.

He said he received no complaints from LGBT partygoers, and those he had spoken to had assured him they would be returning.

Although he had no official figures to support his assertion, Dear said the number of gays coming to the island for the Crop Over Festival was increasing.

“A cross-section of the LGBT [community] was here for Crop Over and they all enjoyed themselves. More have been coming over the years, and this year I think was the most,” he said.

“If you check with tourism officials and they tell you about 10,000 people came in, I would figure that 5000 [were] from the LGBT community. There were plenty.”

Meantime, Dear commended law enforcement officials for the security they provided during the festival.

“I really must applaud the Commissioner of Police and his team and the Defence Force and everybody that had anything to do with security. The planning was immaculate,” Dear declared.
