PRESS RELEASE:– The Rotary Clubs of St. Lucia will be celebrating 50 years of “Rotary in St. Lucia” from July 1, 2016-June 30, 2017 under the theme “Service with a Golden Touch.”
Though founded in Chicago, Illinois in 1905, the first Rotary Club in St. Lucia was sponsored by the Rotary Club Runcorn, U.K. and chartered in St. Lucia on July 21, 1966 under then President Sir Garnet Gordon (QC).
In 1975 the second club was chartered in Vieux Fort, “Rotary Club of St. Lucia South”, under President Victor Eudoxie. In 1993, three (3) Past Presidents from the Rotary club of St. Lucia in Lisle Chase, Tom Alexander and Mike Thom, helped establish and charter the Rotary Club of Gros Islet. Today there are approximately 70 Rotarians on the island.
Rotary International is the largest international Service organization whose stated human purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and to advance goodwill and peace around the world. There are approximately 1.3 million Rotarians in over 200 countries and territories.
Rotary’s primary motto is “Service Above Self” and its secondary motto is “One Profits Most Who Serves Best.”

* Is it the TRUTH?
* Is it FAIR to all concerned?
* Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Rotary International’s most notable global project to date is the eradication of Polio worldwide.
In Saint Lucia, Rotary is best known for:
* Providing two (2) Mobile Blood Banks to the Ministry of Health
* Eradication of Bilharzia
* Mobile Youth Clinic
* Feeding of the poor
* Annual Easter Anti-Drug Youth Camp
* Doctors in Action Programme
* The Babonneau Water Tanks Project
* Wheelchair Distribution
* Dunnottar School Programme
The Clubs major fund raisers includes:
* Annual Wine and Cheese Fiesta – Government House
* Annual Golf Tournament – Cap Estate Golf Club
* Motor Treasure Hunt
* Annual Rotary Calabashers Charity Concerts
The Rotary Clubs sponsor a number of affiliated clubs that promote the good of Rotary in their community:
1. Rotaract Clubs – Young men and women aged 18-30 years
2. Interact Clubs – School based clubs for students aged 12-18 years
3. Rotary Community Corps – Volunteer organization for non-Rotarian men and women willing to serve their community
4. Inner Wheel – Comprising wives and daughters of Rotarians
The 50th Anniversary Celebration commenced with a Church Service at the Castries Methodist Church followed by a fellowship breakfast for club members and family. On August 7, 2016 the clubs hosted a “Family Day” for the entire Rotary family in Saint Lucia at the Pigeon Island National Landmark. A number of special activities and events have been planned to celebrate Rotary’s 50th anniversary throughout the year. These will include the following activities up to the end of 2016:
a. An official Press Launch of the anniversary celebrations and calendar of events
b. Official launch of the first Early Act Club in St. Lucia and in this Rotary District.
c. Launch of a special Commemorative Rotary 50th Anniversary Magazine
d. Launch of the Rotary Human Resource Enrichment Centre, the flagship project to signify Rotary’s 50th anniversary
A number of other special community service events and social engagements will continue into 2017.
