Police Chief says he will not be in the chair if politicians interfere

Polie Chief, Severin Moncherry,  appears to have indicated that he will quit if politicians try to interfere in the operations of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF).

Moncherry was again responding to reports that National Security Minister, Hermangild Francis, who is a former Deputy Police Commissioner, is interfering.

He declared that there is no interference by anyone.

“I would not allow the minister or any other minister of government or any other person to interfere with the running of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force,” Moncherry asserted.

He said:

“The day that is to happen – if it ever happens, I will not be in that chair.”

Severin said that Hermangild Francis being a former police officer does not pose a challenge to him as police commissioner.

He disclosed that Francis was his mentor in the force.

“I worked with him for a very long time so he knows my style and I know his. He knows a lot about the force so this is a plus in that he knows the challenges that we face and the problems that we have to deal with,” Severin explained.

He revealed that in meetings with the minister he has told Francis  “in no uncertain terms” that during his stint as commissioner he will not allow political interference in the police force.

Severin said Francis has never attempted to interfere even before that discussion.

“We have a very good rapport,” he observed, adding that the minister is very passionate about a lot of things as a former police officer.

However Severin declared that he can categorically say that there has been no interference by Francis in operational matters of the police force.

The Police Commissioner was a guest on the MBC Television programme – Police Insight, last night.
